Choose the work you want to do

ESG consulting covers different activities: sustainability reporting, climate risk, governance, investment analysis and operational implementation. Start with a defined client problem and build on your existing discipline. Expertise in one area does not automatically qualify you to advise in all of them.

Build a foundation, then specialize

Learn how environmental, social and governance issues connect to an organization’s activities, risks and decisions. Read primary standards and guidance, and distinguish the intended audience and scope of each framework. For example, IFRS sustainability disclosures focus on information relevant to investors, lenders and other creditors; that is not the same as every possible sustainability reporting objective.

Choose training for the skills gap

Relevant study may involve finance, environmental science, engineering, data analysis or governance. Compare course content and prerequisites with the work you intend to perform. Check current credential names and requirements directly with the provider. A certificate can support learning, but does not by itself demonstrate practical competence or guarantee employment.

Develop evidence of your work

Seek supervised projects where you can assess data quality, document assumptions and turn findings into clear recommendations. Practise reading financial and sustainability reports, testing calculations and explaining uncertainty. Build examples using public or permitted information; obtain permission before sharing client work and protect confidential details.

Work within clear boundaries

Be accurate about your experience, disclose conflicts and involve qualified specialists when a mandate exceeds your capabilities. Build relationships through useful contributions and keep your knowledge current. Experienced independent consultants whose skills complement Facultas’s work can explore our collaboration page; this is not a promise of employment or a mandate.
